The intense competition for fuel cell ships among countries all over the world starts now. European countries and other developed countries have accelerated development of ships equipped with fuel cells under government support instead of existing diesel engines as marine pollution regulations are being reinforced by MARPOL, the regulation that nitrogen oxides emissions from ships should be reduced 80% by 2016.

It¡¯s time to invest in fuel cell ships for long-term competitiveness. The fuel cell ship is a new concept vessel. Even if we can¡¯t build large merchant ships if we prepare now it is obvious that technology adoption from developed countries would be easy. Various applications of fuel cells based on core technologies like vehicles, power plants, trains, aircraft, ships and portable electronic devices have been tried.

If government, shipbuilding industry, and academia collaborate on fuel cell ship and then make a splendid achievement in the development, it would contribute not only to the shipbuilding sector but also fuel cells, the core of next-generation hydrogen to strength competitiveness in general.

Cars, trains, air craft, vessels equipped with fuel cells have already appeared. However, when it becomes commercialized depends upon each point of view. Fuel cells¡¯ greatest strength is high thermal efficiency and environmental friendliness.
In contrast, the biggest difficulties are high production cost, incomplete technical support, and supplying hydrogen so it is hard to say that fuel cells will become mainstream of motors any time soon. Nevertheless, it is certain that fuel cells achieve more significant results day by day.
Developing of environmentally friendly fuel cell ships should be made as soon as possible because the center of next-generation shipbuilding and related equipment industries would be an innovative technology developed country. Also, accelerating the developing should be enforced in terms of the international contributions.
In the future, shipbuilding and shipping sectors will change their aspects with the meaning that greenhouse gas reduction technology is competitiveness of the business. It is necessary to contribute international community with decisive investment and consolidate the role of shipbuilding and shipping industry internationally.
Considering ship¡¯s special characteristics, approaching to developing of fuel cell ships and its system is difficult in terms of short-term perspective. There needs to be given direction and shared responsibility through individual companies, research institutes and academia with a neutral institute who plays a key role under government control from the beginning.
Therefore, developing of fuel cell ships and its system should be pursued to maximize the efficiency of research in a short time with minimum cost so it can be a possible passage to exchange developed technologies and information.
When all of these situations match up right systematically, developing of marine fuel cells and marine fuel cells systems will be able to occupy in industry. It is estimated that it becomes opportunities opening new big markets so it can be essential for continuing success of Korean shipbuilding, shipping, shipbuilding and offshore equipment industry.
