Ballast Water Treatment System industry’; can be still a blue ocean？
Water on earth is divided into sea water and fresh water, and the other small amount of water exists in the air. Sea water covers 70.8% of the earth surface and accounts for 97.5% of the total water on the earth. The average depth of the ocean is 3,795 m, and it says that the value of 2,647 m is obtained by dividing the total amount with earth surface area.
In large marine system, it has approximately 180,000 kinds of living animals and 20,000 species of plants. According to the science of classification, most animals belonging to the door from protozoa to vertebrates live only in the sea, and also there are quite many animal cases that the sea is the center of the distribution. If considering that depending on water temperature or depth, the different types of sea creatures live in the sea, it would be considered that we’ve very poor knowledge about the sea. Many of these sea creatures live and coexist in their own area, but human makes artificial movement of these being followed by disturbance to the marine ecosystem. One of the causes is so-called 'ballast water' that vessels carry to discharge it. Accordingly, countries got considered the degree of injury of ballast water that is released with not being treated outward and as the result, a new era of shipbuilding industry came to the name of the ballast water treatment industry. For the development of ballast water treatment technology, Korea took a quick movement. The reason is due to the wonderful item that is not been before ever. Then, now the industry is still available to be useful？ In the point that the ratification of 30 countries that covers more than 35% of the merchant fleet, based on convention on ballast water management is getting realized, focuses are done for today and tomorrow of the ballast water treatment system. 1. Importance of Ballast Water Treatment System As Figure 1. indicates the exotic marine species cause ecosystem disturbance to create a terrible loss. The examples are as follows. |
